Now that you have been exposed to a variety of contemporary artists and their processes, we are going to conclude this class by revisiting the role of an artist. Ai Wei Wei is an artist whose work is a juxtaposition of the traditional Chinese arts in relation to the contemporary social and political issues in China.

Wei Wei often poses his critique of his own Chinese culture, through the guise of the formal applications of art in his pieces. Ai Wei Wei has an interesting insight into what makes him an artist and what his particular role is in China and globally.

After watching the video from Art 21 and PBS Frontline, on the contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei, and reflecting back on what you have learned about artists throughout this course, please answer the following questions below on the discussion board.

Chapter 15 and 16 discuss architecture and the design profession. Andrea Zittel’s work relates to both of these mediums. In Zittel’s bio on it states that, “Influenced by modernist design and architecture from the early twentieth century…Zittel creates clothing, furniture, homes and vehicles.

Her sculptures and installations transform everything necessary for life, such as eating, sleeping, bathing and socializing, into artful experiments…

Zittel continually reinvents her relationship with her environment.” Zittel’s work plays an interesting role in making the viewer question through design, how much we really need to exist.
