Some people are better interculturalists than others. Contrast one person from the host culture (other than Dr. Neil Ernst or Dr. Peggy Philp) in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down who you feel is not a successful interculturalist with Dwight Conquergood, who obviously is successful.
What does Conquer good do, know, or understand that makes him successful?

1. Name, explain, and cite one concept relating to verbal aspects of intercultural communication that we learned this semester and show how it is illustrated in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.
2. Name, explain, and cite an additional concept relating to verbal aspects of intercultural communication that we learned this semester and show how it is illustrated in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.
3. Define and cite the concept of face. Provide an example from The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down that illustrates the Hmong view of face and explain how it demonstrates the concept.
4. In the fields of Laos, the Hmong all farmed as equals. They did not have a written language to distinguish among themselves in terms of education. How then did the concept of power distance or verticality apply to their culture? How has their conceptualization of power distance or verticality been affected by their migration to the U.S.?
5. Did Anne Fadiman herself demonstrate intercultural competence in her relationships with the Hmong? Define intercultural competence, citing our text, and then support your answer using specific examples from the book.
6. Name, explain, and cite an additional course concept not covered elsewhere in your exam responses and show how it applies specifically in Spirit Catches You.
Part III (30 pts)
Provide a model of intercultural transition/adaptation (you may create the model in your document, copy and paste from a source, or insert a photo of a hand-drawn model). The model can be one you or classmates created in class, one you create now, or one that is published in our text or elsewhere. You may not use the u-curve or w-curve models.
Cite your source of this model (an informal source is fine if the model isn’t from a published work; just be clear about where your model is coming from).
Explain the model and demonstrate with specific support from The Spirit how the Hmong experience illustrates and/or conflicts with the model you’ve presented. How does the model capture the experience of the Hmong? How does the model fail to represent the experience of the Hmong?
