In Australia voluntary assisted dying (VAD) legislation has been passed in all states except New South Wales (NSW), the Northern Territory (NT) and The Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Queensland is the most recent state to pass VAD legislation and it will be accessible from 2023. While the criteria for accessing VAD is different in each state, the eligibility is generally consistent across all states. There is however no uniform national approach to legislating voluntary assisted dying in Australia. Instead, each state has its own legislation which has been carefully crafted and debated.
Critically discuss whether law reform would be preferential to adopt uniform national VAD legislation. In your answer, provide critical arguments/reasoning as to why you support or object to a uniform national law. Include any ethical or social considerations.
