Description

For this assignment, you will write a critique essay on one of the sources you’re considering using for the final Research Essay.

You will need to develop a set of criteria to evaluate the source with, and then determine whether the assigned reading is effective (or not) based on that criteria.

Essentially, you are evaluating the source from the perspective of a researcher, using criteria that deal with the execution of the writing, such as clear message/argument, accessible language, quality of examples that support the topic, etc.

This should be organized as a formal essay, with an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph. The thesis statement should be the overall judgement of the effectiveness or quality of the writing, and the body paragraphs should each cover a different piece of criteria used to develop the thesis.

Using only one of the sources you’re thinking of using for the final Research Essay, write a 3-4 page critique essay of the source. As a formal essay, this should be organized with an introduction paragraph (and thesis), body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Before writing, try to read the source several times and annotate it to make sure you understand the meaning before applying your criteria. Try to challenge yourself to understand what the author is arguing, and how that argument is being articulated, using the directions for creating criteria and evaluating a text in this week’s resources.

Follow this organization for the essay (as explained in the How to Write a Critique Essay (9:25) video:

Introduction (1 paragraph)

Summary (1-2 paragraphs)

Evaluation (at least 2 paragraphs, but may be as many as needed)

Response (1-2 paragraphs)

Conclusion (1 paragraph)

As you write, develop a thesis that gives a direct statement of how well the source measures up to the specific criteria you used to evaluate it. As part of the introduction, include a short list of the criteria you used in the evaluation section.

Also, in the body of the essay, make sure to cite specific examples from the source in support of the main points, and use APA style for essay formatting, title page, and citations. The conclusion paragraph should summarize the thesis and the main point made in each body paragraph, giving a final, overall judgement of the source based on the criteria used.
