Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the foundation for all interventions in the healthcare. According to Duke University Medical Center, EBP can be defined as “the integration of clinical expertise, patient values and the best research evidence into the decision-making process for patient care” (Melnyk, B, 2018). Per Melnyk (2018), EBP is the key to improving patient experiences, improving population health outcomes, decreasing healthcare cost, and improve working life for providers.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that focuses on research to create significant improvements. (National Institutes of Health, n.d.c). This department has around 27 other centers that focuses on other disease and illnesses. The NIH (n.d.c) has four goals:
To promote discoveries and research strategies
To create resources for the public
To increase medical and science awareness, and
To increase scientific integrity and social responsibility in the conduct of science.
The NIH even have information in other languages to close the gap between different cultures.
All of the work done by the NIH is based on EBP. It is located under their research tab, where one can view the different research done by the NIH. The NIH also have a database with peer-review articles to assist healthcare professionals with medical decisions and interventions. The NIH also provides information on EBP programs and how each of their centers use EBP (N National Institutes of Health, n.d.b).
The NIH dates back to around 1887 when it was a one-room research laboratory and has impacted the health of all individuals by increasing the longevity, making illnesses less deadly, developing evidence-based interventions, increasing, and promoting research, and increasing education among the public (National Institutes of Health, n.d.a). After reviewing the NIH website, it is clear that the NIH is a great healthcare organization. I had little knowledge on what they actually did. I was aware of their database for scholarly articles and journals, but very little knowledge on what the NIH exactly focused on.

Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not.
