News Article Review Assignment Instructions
Overview
News Article Review Assignments are intended to develop students’ ability to connect economic theory to current issues of economic policy. Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of economic concepts and their ability to apply those concepts to real-world problems.
To that end, the reviews should be more than a summary of the chosen article, but should evaluate the policy or policies discussed in the article using economic tools not merely expressing a normative preference about the policy, but using economics to evaluate the functioning and/or consequences of the policy.
Instructions
Summarize and discuss a current news article that concerns the interaction between markets and government.
The essay should of 500–700 words, Papers below the minimum length of 500 words or over the maximum of 700 words will be subject to a reduction in points.
Do not include an abstract.
The word requirement does not include the title page or references section.
News articles may come from a newspaper, a news TV or radio program (with transcript), podcast (with transcript), or reputable online source. Note that journal articles and articles explaining economic concepts are not news articles.
The source must be no more than 3 years old. Additional sources, if used, may be of any date but should be reputable. A legible scanned copy of the reviewed article or a link to the online source must be provided with each review.
Essays must evaluate each article using economic concepts covered in this course.
Reviews must be written in current APA format, and complete citations of the reviewed article and any additional sources must be provided.
No more than 20 percent of the reviews may consist of direct quotations from the reviewed article.
