Jeans, and its constituent materials and modes of production, have been an integral part of process of globalization, both past and present. The ascendance of jeans-their use and ubiquity–index the emergence of capitalist-driven global systems in which the ‘West,’ and the US in particular, figure as hegemonic powers.
For this assignment, you will each develop an independent research project examining a global dimension of jeans (consumption) and address the following issues –
1. How this helps you to analyze the US’s role and relative significance in relation to contemporary global processes.
2. Does this global dimension of jeans point to the continuation or waning of US-led Western hegemony with respect to contemporary processes of globalization?
3. Are other geopolitical configurations of globalization are developing? If so, what alternative visions and forms of global relations are developing, and what forms of political-economic and socio-cultural understandings and relations underpin them?
4. What actors are at the forefront of these alternative global forms? Who benefits and who will be at a disadvantage?
Presentation
General Information:
For this assignment you will be responsible for the following:
1. A 15 minute in-class infographic/ visualizing data project presentation (PPT including one infographic and relevant pictures) that will involve a peer-review component taking place Your presentation should outline the argument of your paper and the materials you will be using to support your argument. It should also have 2 questions at the end which encourages the audience to think about the topic more deeply. There will be a 5-minute Q&A period following each presentation where the presenter should pose questions for the class to consider as a whole.
2. A 10-12-page final paper
