Topic: The issue(s) of inequality you’re addressing.
○ Food deserts are areas that have little to no access to affordable, healthy food.
These areas are often but not always in rural regions. Instead of grocery stores with a wide variety of healthy options and produce, the main source of food in food deserts are fast food chains and corner stores/grocery store markets. Food deserts are typically in low-income and minority communities and are rooted in systemic issues.
Living in a food desert increases one’s chance of obesity and various health problems. In our project, we will be addressing the systemic roots that lead to food deserts which include racial segregation, poverty, lack of access to a vehicle, and the marketing choices and power held by fast food corporations.
When families in low income areas are focused on making an income, they turn to what is accessible, fast, and easy, which is fast food, but this is not a personal choice. Systemic racism has caused certain groups in society to be stuck in systems of poverty and forced to turn to fast food. We will also address the inequalities created by food deserts such as health problems being more prevalent in communities of color (specialty African American communities) and obesity in America.

(Research should be about funding and support for coops, community gardens, and farmers’
markets)
