A Day in a (Future) Life

Consider what you’ve already learned about the applications of genetics in this class.

Genetic technologies are being used to solve crimes, cure disease, improve crops, help people discover their ancestry, and inform people about their health risks.

Where do you think all this might go in the future? How do you think genetic technologies, including the detection, analysis, and manipulation of DNA, could be used by people in future generations?

RESEARCH and WRITE.

1) Tell a future genetics story (2 paragraphs minimum – 2 pages maximum).

Sketch out a little scene for us. Tell us a story about a person or experience in the future, showing how that person uses or is affected by a genetics-related technology.

Your story could describe a simple daily routine. It could be about a major life event.

As you write the scene, include or mention an important genetic technology that comes into play.

A good scene could be as short as 2-3 paragraphs and it shouldn’t be longer than a couple of pages.

2) Author’s Note (one 4-6 sentence paragraph).

Tell us where your idea comes from or how it relates to a real existing or proposed genetic technology. Make a case for how or why your idea is possible based on technology that exists now or could likely be developed. Include a link to at least one credible source of information; suggested sites to search and research practices are provided in my Research-Based Writing Guide.

Not sure where to start or where to look? Great site to learn about genetic technology:
