Why This Victim
In Chapter 3, the author describes the idea of “victim blaming”. Victim blaming has been controversial in victimology because we don’t want to ever say the victim was responsible for what happened to them; but, it is useful to know why this person was selected by an offender. Victimologists and criminologists work hard to better understand what makes one person/place more appealing than another. Two newer theories help examine the aspects of our daily routines that make people/places more likely to be targeted.
Keeping in mind the ideas discussed in Chapter 3 and the victimization theories, I would like you to look at the following pictures and explain what makes this person/place more or less likely to be victimized. What is it about the person/place that make them an ‘easier target’? Or what is it about the person/place that makes an offender think twice before committing the crime? Basically I want you to think like an offender- why would you choose this person or place? Again, we are not trying to blame the victim, but it is important to identify why some are victimized more frequently.
