Once you have listened to “We Are in the Future” write a paragraph or two addressing one or more of the following questions
1) What is afrofuturism, and what makes it unique from other genres of science fiction? Look back at the descriptions of Afrofuturism from musicians such as Sun Ra, Erykah Badu and films such as Black Panther and Brown Girl Begins. Make a list of what common characteristics Afrofuturism has. How do those characteristics challenge stereotypes about black people?
2) Why should we consider Afrofuturism a kind of activism? What is the social change that Afrofuturism is championing?
3) Why do the stories being told in Afrofuturistic works represent “important exposure”? What additional kinds of work is Afrofuturism doing apart from changing how others perceive black people?
4) Can you think of other examples of TV and film (besides The Wire) that contribute to the stereotyping of African Americans and reinforce prejudice?
5) Can you think of any additional films, television shows, games, songs, art, novels, or short stories that fall into the category of Afrofuturism. What makes these works fit into this category?
Write a response to a classmate’s post as well, explaining why you agree or disagree with your classmate, and perhaps adding to what he or she has said. This can be a shorter post, but still needs to be at least 3 or 4 sentences long, and should consist of more than I agree, or I disagree.
