After the completion of IDL3 preliminary and final assignments, you will have completed a probabilistic analysis and presented the findings in a memorandum in the role of a Forensic Engineer completing an expert witness legal memorandum. This document will be sent to the Court involved with a class action lawsuit that involves the product you will be evaluating. For this purpose, you will address your memorandum to the Judge. However, it must be understandable to the jury who will reference it, and it is also likely to be referenced by the lawyers on both sides of the litigation.
For this assignment, you will work on two skills you will need for the final assignment.
Identify a problem and how to approach solving it using the problem identification steps from the Polya method for solving problems mathematically. Polya developed this method as an approach for identifying how mathematical tools can be used to address a problem. The first 3 problems you will complete in element 1 of this work will give you a chance to practice using this method before you apply it to the fourth problem, for which you will use the problem described in your IDL 3 Final assignment.
Communicate what you have been provided in terms of the case, your element of it, the data available, and what you will be able to do with it. The content you will complete this for is the IDL 3 Final problem.
Element 1: Problem Identifications The assignment template includes 3 problem descriptions in addition to referencing your final problem. Identify the required information for each problem using the Polya method to help you think through the problems.
Element 2: Paragraph Presenting Data Complete a draft of the paragraph to be used in your final document for the ‘Facts’ section of the memorandum. This section is designed to provide the readers an understanding of the context of the problem, the data known, what the data represents in terms of the problem, and how this input allows you to structure an analysis to evaluate the situation in question. This section of your final document will only include what you are given and what it will enable you to consider; it will not proceed into the statistical analysis.
