1. What is informality? Give at least 2 explanations for its predominance in Developing World cities. Drawing directly on films shown in class discuss how leaders take different policy responses to the urban poor and how the urban poor push back in Mexico, South Africa, and China.
2. European colonialism profoundly shaped urban geographies & urban systems across Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Discuss at least two ways in which European colonialism set patterns for urban geographies and urban systems in these regions.
3. Discuss at least 2 ways gender roles and relations are being transformed through processes of globalization.
4. Drawing on material from the Global South discuss at least 2 different specific ways various forms of migration and mobility are important to or are reshaping global cities.
5. What is the relationship between economic reform and urbanization in China, India, and Latin America? How were reforms implemented differently? Give two examples of how cities in any of these countries were transformed through economic integration with the global economy.
