First–1-Minute Speech

Instructions: When submitting your speech, tell me your audience, purpose, and time before you start.  You can say this at the beginning of your speech or submit it in text on a document or comments on Canvas.  This is worth 10 points and is really important.  If you are being sarcastic with a dry sense of humor and I don’t know, I could be really confused and grade you badly because I didn’t get it.

With social media, I think it is important that you master this skill.  Most people won’t watch anything too long so the key is to get them to watch to the end and remember your message.  Many companies are hiring social media experts to help them share their brand.  These platforms are free tools to get your voice out there.  You can engage with real people.  How are you going to do it?  What are you going to say?

Ideas:
Pick a story/writing you like and point out one detail about it explain how it helps the overall text.
Pick a movie and explain one scene and explain what happened and why it is so important.  Maybe it is a visual technique or a quote or the way an actor delivers a performance
Heath Ledger as the Joker–the laugh and posture; the fashion/costumes in The Black Panther, dated attitude in an older TV show
Send a motivational message
might be a personal story, the story of someone you look up to, a personal mantra
Teach something quick
Best way to proof read a paper, how to set a healthy goal, how to do a proper push up, how to control your temper, how to greet people in a different language, teach one non-English word .
Pitch an idea for funding on a new product
Grading:
10 points: Engaging intro–you’ve got seconds to hook your listener
10 points: Conclusive ending–not abrupt; makes listener feel fulfilled
10 points: Content–it has to be interesting/important/relevant/unique–but it doesn’t have to be serious.  It can be a how-to demonstration on how to play with cats or a review of a game or movie you like or didn’t like.  It can be how to make your favorite food.  It can be in protest over the prison system.  It can be a commercial for a something you have made  or a presentation to a pretend company .  You can run for political office or give an inspiring speech.  Just don’t be boring.  Your own passion will bring interest to the viewer.  I’ve watched videos on raising kids, on bugs (I hate bugs), how to care for hair with type 3 and 4 curls .
10%: Easy to follow–make sure you keep it connected and focused.  Keep it tied to your thesis/core idea/purpose.
10%: Audience–Tailor your tone/language/purpose to your audience.  If you are talking about war or tragedy or death, don’t be too cheery.  If you are trying to teach a skill to young kids, don’t use complicated language.  Pick an appropriate audience–don’t try to sell a house to a child .
10%: Speed–Don’t talk to fast or slow.  Most people have problems with talking too fast.  I naturally talk fast and being nervous makes me talk even faster.  Put a note next to your camera to remind you to take it slow and don’t be afraid to pause every so often.
10%:  Body language–don’t fidget too much, don’t use too many hand gestures.  Use them when making important points or to illustrate changes
10%:  Time–the speech fits into the time stated by the student.  Do not go more than 30 seconds over or under.
10%:  Following Directions–there will be a few things you need to do when submitting your speech.  Make sure you do them!
10%:  You did it!  10 points just for being brave and recording yourself.
