Introduction
In the realm of advanced practice nursing, every clinical experience presents an opportunity for growth and learning. This reflection delves into my recent clinical encounter, highlighting the challenges, successes, patient assessment process, differential diagnoses, and health promotion interventions. Furthermore, the reflection underscores the lessons learned from this experience and their potential impact on my role as an advanced practice nurse.
Clinical Experience Overview
During this week’s clinical rotation, I encountered a patient with a complex medical history and a myriad of symptoms, which required a comprehensive assessment and collaborative care approach. The patient’s primary concerns were centered around persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and a noticeable decrease in appetite. This prompted an in-depth exploration of their medical history, physical examination, and relevant diagnostic tests.
Challenges and Successes
One notable challenge I encountered was gathering accurate information from the patient due to their fluctuating cognitive status. However, by employing effective communication strategies and collaborating with the healthcare team, I managed to obtain essential information for a comprehensive assessment. A notable success was devising a holistic care plan that addressed the patient’s immediate needs while considering their long-term health goals.
Patient Assessment and Differential Diagnoses
The patient’s presentation of abdominal pain, weight loss, and decreased appetite prompted consideration of several differential diagnoses: gastrointestinal malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and peptic ulcer disease (PUD) (Lichtenstein et al., 2020).
