This module will be assessed on the basis of a 3000 word report that has (in addition to an introduction and conclusion) three chapters that drawn on the topics of at least three different weeks. The case studies should focus on either a particular country and/or its migrants.
Migration to Greece and the three chapters could be:
• Patterns of immigration to Greece (week 2)
• Smuggling through Greek borders (week 4)
• Migration control policies in Greece (week 5)
The report should contain:
Factual information on the case study drawn from reports, e.g.
o Patterns of immigration to Greece: what have been the dominant patterns of immigration to Greece since the 1990s?
o Smuggling through Greek borders: what are the main smuggling patterns through Greek borders?
o Migration control policies in Greece: What admission policies has the Greek state adopted to regulate entry? What kind of border and internal controls?
A discussion/analysis of the factual account which engages with the broader theoretical and empirical context of the case study. For example, based on the above information, a student might want to discuss the following:
o Patterns of immigration to Greece: how do migration patterns to Greece relate to global migration ‘drivers’? To what extent can theoretical frameworks account for migration patterns to Greece?
o Smuggling through Greek borders: How can we explain existing smuggling patterns to Greece? What does research tell us about their social organisation?
o Migration control policies in Greece: To what extent are Greek migration control policies shaped by EU asylum and migration policies? By domestic interests? Do they work? What are their implications for migrants?
