Reflect on skills in which you believed that you were an expert as an RN. Now, identify skills that make you uncomfortable as a novice APN student. Describe a plan for gaining comfort with these new skills.
Chapter 8
Do you agree that consultation is a core competency of advanced practice nursing? Does it help distinguish advanced practice nursing for you? Why or why not? Are there certain elements of this competency that are more important than others?

Differentiate the terms of teaching/patient education; APN guidance, including anticipatory guidance; and APN coaching. How do they differ and how are they similar? How are these interventions incorporated into APN practice? What are the goals of each role and anticipated outcomes?

Review the types of communication in the chapter and compare them with the definition of collaboration in the chapter. Describe situations in which you have used the types of communication that are not collaborative. Under what circumstances would each type of interaction be likely to work to help patients and improve outcomes? Why might parallel communication and functioning not be helpful?
