You must use the information in this scenario foryour assessment. Ensure thatyou have read the requirements of the task and follow the task instructions carefully. You have recently been appointed to the role of team leader at your place of work and your manager has informed you that there is an issue thatyou will need to deal with as a priority.

This is just your second shift in this role, and your second shift at this PoD.You have been transferred here on a promotion and you are about to find out why management were so enthusiastic for you to take up the role. This PoD has 20 paramedics, 10 PTOs, a Manager and now yourself in a Team Leader role.

The PoD is a designated training station and students from the 3 universities that offer paramedicine locally, provide a constant stream of students ranging from first to third year. Having workedin larger PoDs previously, you are used to facilitating studentlearning. In the meeting you just had with your Manager, you have been advised thatyour priority is to deal with the new graduate paramedic who is starting tomorrow, and who is on a Performance Improvement Plan –before she even starts work.

Your manager also informs you that 6 of the paramedics at the PoD are also on a Performance Improvement Plan and that this stems from their involvement with the new Graduate Paramedic when she was undertaking her final placement at the PoD at theend of last year.As a paramedic student undertaking clinical placement, she was considered to be lacking in clinical competence to the point where thesix (6)paramedics involved insupervising her, were concerned that she has the potential to cause significant harmto patients, with a high potential thatthe result an tharm could be fatal.

Six(6) paramedics were involved in facilitating herclinical placement practice due to a combination of factors including annual leave, sick leave and shift rotations. The overwhelming consensus of opinion from all six (6) was thatshe has the potential to kill a patient because of the lack of competence she demonstrates. Despite this the facilitators all signed off on her being competent as a final year paramedic.

All were of the opinion that she wouldn’tbe coming back to their PoD as a graduate paramedic, effectively she would be somebody else’s problem to deal with. In the allocation of the new graduates, she is allocated to your new PoD and upon hearing this news, the staff at the station indicated that they would refuse to work with this person as she was a significant threat to patient safety and would likely cause harmto patients, with the significant possibility that the harm could be fatal. When questioned as to how she had passed the final placement, given that it was this PoD where she completed placement, the six (6) paramedics stated “We didn’tthink she would be backhere, so we passed her anyway!”
