1. Guidance for this Assessment
1.1. Assessment overview
Analyse the following case study with reference to theory and research on sleep and dreaming. Evaluate the evidence available and use it to justify your conclusions.
Martina is a married, 52 year old shift worker who is employed as a mental health support worker. Her shift pattern includes days, afternoon and night shifts and she is also on call during some of her days off. Martina is in good health but has found it increasingly difficult to sleep over the last twelve months resulting in her continually feeling tired. Martina has also lost her appetite and finds it extremely difficult to eat breakfast in the morning. Six months ago her daughter returned to the family home, to live with Martina and her husband, along with her young baby as she had recently been divorced. When Martina does manage to sleep she often wakes in the middle of the night due to disturbing dreams about her family.

Key Point 1: Demonstrate an understanding of the role of biological rhythms in human functioning, including the influence of infradian, ultradian and circadian rhythms.
Key Point 2: Describe and apply research into how the body is affected when these rhythms are disrupted.
Key Point 3: Evaluate theory and research into patterns of sleep and sleep deprivation and dreaming.
Key Point 4: Make suggestions for improvement with reference to research to justify your points.

1.3. Assessment Structure
The assignment should follow an essay format and include an introduction and conclusion and be submitted together with a reference list.
